Lead with How
Be one of the first to use it.
Lead with How is an impact storytelling and intelligence platform. A place to capture stories, name your key moves, and build a model of how you do what you do. We're letting people in this spring, one cohort at a time.
No spam, no automated drip. Alison will reach out personally.
✦
You're on the list.
Alison will reach out this week with your invite. In the meantime, you can follow her writing at alisonkling.com.
Let's start with you.
A few details and we'll build your impact model together.
21-day trial. No card required. We will never charge your card without you knowing.
"I show up. At the bank, at Compass, at my worktable at 10pm. The people in front of me deserve someone who stays."
Kate has three things she pours herself into. Each one is its own story. All of it is her how.
Day job
Millbrook Community Bank
Community Relations Manager
Where Kate builds financial trust one relationship at a time. She knows the names, the histories, the families. Her Key Move: show up before they have to ask.

Volunteer
Compass Youth
Weekly Mentor
Every Tuesday Kate shows up for Jerome and Sofia. She has been showing up for three years. That consistency is the whole point. She is proof that the relationship is the program.

Side hustle
Purl & Purpose Co
Founder
Kate builds custom hand-knit goods with a give-back model: every purchase puts yarn in a classroom. She started with one skein and a hat for her mother. 200 orders later, she is still making things that carry weight.

Peek inside the experience
This is what Lead with How looks like from the inside. One person. Three contexts. The same how, running through all of it.
Every capture is dated, tagged, and searchable. This is Kate's evidence.
Mar 24, 2020Show up before they have to ask
The COVID calls
Dana pulled the full list of small business accounts and started calling. Forty-seven calls in three days. Just to say: we see you, we are here. A florist named Gerry had been with a large bank for twelve years. They sent emails. Dana called.
Apr 7, 2023Make it by hand, make it matter
The memorial blanket
A customer named Rosie found Kate through Instagram. Her daughter had died in January and she wanted something to hold. When Kate delivered it, Rosie held it to her face and said: "It smells like intention."
Sep 19, 2023Put students in the story
The Tuesday knitters at Compass
Kate brought her yarn bag to a Tuesday session. Three teenagers stayed after. Over eight weeks they each finished a scarf. Marcus wore his to the holiday event. His grandmother cried. "She said my grandfather used to knit. I did not know that about him."
Key Moves
Not a mission statement. What you actually do. Kate has them in all three places.
At Millbrook Bank, Kate's Key Moves:
01
Know the name behind the number
We start with the person. Their goals, their history, their family. Every account has a story.
02
Show up before they have to ask
We call before there is a problem. We show up before there is a reason to.
03
Invest in the block
Local lending, local hiring, local giving. We bank here because we live here.
04
Find a path to yes
When the standard answer is no, we find the creative path that gets someone to yes.
At Purl & Purpose Co, the same instinct, different words:
01
Make it by hand, make it matter
Every piece is made with intention. The person who receives it can feel the difference.
02
Put students in the story
Every purchase funds a classroom yarn kit. The give-back is not a campaign. It is the whole point.
The Digest
Every week, what's building. For Kate, her team, or her board.
Week of April 28
Compass Youth
What's building
Jerome made the honor roll this quarter. He has attended 22 consecutive sessions. Three years ago he stopped responding to texts for three weeks. He came back. David was there. That is the whole story and it took three years to write.
Story added this week"Priya drove her twice" — Aaliyah passed her GED on the second try.
Pattern emerging✦ 4 of your last 6 stories connect to "Show up every week." Something is happening here.
What to celebrateMarcus is now on staff. He started as a mentee. He stayed. That is the whole mission in one person.
AI Generate
Kate's stories become content. Written toward whoever she's reaching.
Generated from Kate's Compass Youth stories:
This quarter, Compass Youth delivered on every one of its core commitments.
Twenty-two consecutive sessions. Honor roll. A student who is now on staff. These are not anecdotes. They are the metric. Presence, over time, produces outcomes that no single intervention can replicate.
Volunteers showed up when it was inconvenient. Coordinators drove twice. Staff paid retest fees from their own pockets. The board should know: this organization does not drift from its how under pressure. It goes deeper.
Recommendation: sustain the mentorship-to-staff pipeline. Marcus is not an exception. He is what the model produces when it works.
Generated from Kate's Purl & Purpose stories:
200 orders. 18 months. $3,200 worth of yarn delivered to classrooms across four schools.
I started with one skein and a hat for my mother. I was not trying to build a business. I was trying to do something with my hands that felt like love.
The 200th package went to a retired teacher in Vermont who has ordered seven things. I tucked a handwritten note inside. I told her she was part of why I kept going.
Generated from Compass Youth's full story archive:
For three years, Compass Youth has operated on a single organizing principle: consistency is the intervention.
Our data bears this out. Mentees who experience 20 or more consecutive sessions show measurably better academic outcomes, higher self-reported confidence, and significantly lower program attrition. Jerome's story is one. Sofia's is another. Marcus, now a junior staff member, represents a third cohort entirely: the young people who stayed long enough to become what they needed.
The requested funding would sustain three mentor-student pairs for twelve months. It would also fund the peer leadership program that turned one young man from a mentee into a model.
Pattern Spotter
The app watches what's building. You don't have to find the pattern. It finds you.
✦
Something's emerging.
I've been watching Kate's stories across all three contexts.
In 14 of her last 18 stories — across the bank, Compass, and her knitting business — the central move is the same: Kate stayed when she could have left.
She called before she had to. She drove twice. She delivered a blanket instead of shipping it. She showed up to Compass when Jerome wasn't texting back.
This is not a coincidence. It is her how. And it is consistent across every single context she operates in.
Pattern: "Staying is the strategy"
✦
A second thread.
Across Purl & Purpose:
Three of Kate's last four stories connect to a moment where someone received something and didn't have words for it. Rosie held the blanket. Marcus's grandmother cried. The woman watching knitting videos through chemo never asked for help — she just found it.
Kate makes things that meet people where words stop.

Your first Key Move
And a hint of your mission
Let's start with a moment.
One story is all we need. The rest will follow.
Step 1 of 4
Start with anything.
Lead with How is grounded in story and lived experience. You can share your perspective on something, a story from your life, or a story about the work you are doing. Every story helps us learn more about your work, your mission, and your vision. This is the place where you can just talk. We will remember it, sort it, and help you clarify it.
✦

Need a place to start? Try one of these.
Think of this as your library. Put things in. We'll help you make sense of them later.
Your story points to something specific about the way you lead and do your work. I gave it a name, but it's yours to shape.
Your first Key Move
Edit it, or leave it as is. You can always refine it later.
And I heard a hint of your mission:
START WITH YOU
Lead with How starts with you.
This is a person-first, story-first space. Just set up your own account. If you lead an organization, you can add it now or later — your stories live with you either way.
✦
Person-first, story-first.
Your account is yours. Stories you capture live with you. If you also lead an organization (a nonprofit, a church, a business, a team), you can add it as a separate home anytime — and decide which of your stories flow there.
Who you are
We took a guess from your story. Change it to your own words anytime.
Are you also setting up an organization?
Most people start with just their own account and add an org later as it makes sense. Pick whichever fits.
Adding an org gives you a separate home for it alongside your personal account. Your stories stay with you by default. They only flow to the org when you say so.
We'll scan your site and pull out story moments. You choose which to keep.
Where you're headed
Your vision. Bigger than your org, worth a lifetime of work.
Your impact model is starting.
Every story you add will deepen it and reveal what's already there. You don't have to figure everything out today.

Talk with your How Agent, then save what's worth keeping.
PDFs, scans, contracts, letters, prayers. The agent reads everything (yes, even scanned pages), summarizes it, and it lives in your archive so you can find it later. Photos of moments belong in A Photo — that path drafts a story.
Paste the link and a quick line on why it matters. The agent will save it to your Thinking Lab and connect it to your work.
Behind a paywall? Paste the article text here →
For WSJ, NYT, or any subscriber-only site: copy the article text from your browser (you're logged in there, we're not) and paste it below. The agent will summarize from your paste instead of trying to fetch the URL.
Build an Apple Shortcut once. From then on: tap Share on any Note, pick "Send to Lead with How," and it lands in your Thinking Lab as a memo.
Open the Shortcuts app on your iPad or iPhone.
Tap + to make a new Shortcut. Name it "Send Note to Lead with How."
Add action: Get Text from Input (this captures the Note's text when you run the Shortcut from the Share Sheet).
Add action: Get Contents of URL. Tap the URL row and paste this:
https://leadwithhow.com/api/orgs/YOUR-ORG/notes
Expand the URL action so you can see Method, Headers, and Request Body.
Tap the small chevron (⌄) on the right edge of the action. On some iOS versions you tap the action's title bar or scroll inside the action card. Set Method to POST.
Under Headers, add two rows. Each row has a Key column and a Value column — paste each piece into the correct column.
Row 1 KeyContent-Type
Row 1 Valueapplication/json
Row 2 KeyAuthorization
Row 2 ValueBearer YOUR-TOKEN
Set Request Body to JSON. JSON mode wants one field per key — add three rows:
Field 1 Keytext
Field 1 ValueTap the value field. Above the keyboard, tap the blue variable chip and pick Provided Input (from your Get Text from Input action).
Field 2 Keykind
Field 2 Valuememo
Field 3 Keydate
Field 3 ValueTap the value field. Tap the variable chip and pick Current Date. Set its format to yyyy-MM-dd in the variable's options.
Save. In the Shortcut's settings (top right gear), toggle on "Show in Share Sheet".
Open any Apple Note → Share button → scroll to "Send Note to Lead with How". Tap it. Your note appears in the Thinking Lab as a memo within a few seconds.
Your URL and auth token above are pre-filled with YOUR org and YOUR token. Don't share them with anyone — that token gives access to your account. If you ever want to rotate it, sign out and sign back in.

Help & Resources
Everything you need to get the most from Lead with How.
The Foundation
Why
+
Lead with How is a leadership framework designed by Alison Kling to help organizations stop spinning and start scaling.
Most organizations know their What - their mission - and their Why - their vision. But the missing piece is always the How. How, specifically, do you carry out your mission? How do you move from where you are to the world you're trying to build?
The How is where impact lives. And once you find it, you have to say it out loud - in every room, to every funder, on every platform. That's what this app helps you do.
The Framework
How
+
How is a strategic model. A repeatable pattern of behavior that connects what you do (mission) to the world you want to create (vision).
It's the unique pathway you take to carry out your mission and achieve your vision. Your Key Moves are the specific, active, daily practices that make up your How. They're the lived reality of how your organization shows up every day.
Once you figure out your How, you need to lead with it. Communicate it out loud, in as many contexts as possible. That's the work this app is built to support.
Getting Started
How the App Works
+
1. Build your impact model. Start with your Mission (what you do), Vision (the future you're building), and Key Moves (your specific How). The AI can help suggest Key Moves based on your mission and vision.
2. Capture stories. Every story is evidence that your How is real and working. Quotes, data, moments - capture them as they happen. The more specific, the better.
3. Generate outputs. LinkedIn posts, board summaries, annual report drafts, speeches - the AI uses your stories and Key Moves to write in your voice, grounded in your actual work.
4. Watch your core impact statement emerge. As stories accumulate, the AI will synthesize what's becoming true about your organization. You'll see it appear in your impact model.
Common Questions
FAQ
+
What are Key Moves? Key Moves are your specific How - the active, strategic practices your organization repeats every day. Not values, not goals. The real work, named.
Who should capture stories? Everyone. The janitor at NASA who said "I'm putting a man on the moon" - that's a story. The CEO's communication is only as powerful as the stories underneath it.
Can I invite others to add stories? Yes - use the Invite Contributors button on your dashboard. Anyone with the link can add stories without creating an account.
Is my data private? Your impact model and stories are private to your account. Nothing is shared without your action.
What powers the AI? Claude by Anthropic - one of the most thoughtful AI models available, chosen because it writes with nuance and warmth rather than corporate flatness.

The Person Behind the Framework
Meet Alison
+
Alison Kling is a leadership strategist, author, and the creator of the Lead with How framework. She works with organizations of all sizes to help them find their How - the specific, repeatable practices that make their mission real and their vision reachable.
She believes that the most powerful thing a leader can do is name their How and say it out loud, over and over, until everyone around them can say it too.
Short videos walking you through every part of the app - from building your impact model to generating a LinkedIn post in under two minutes.
New tutorials added as the app grows.
Your Data
Privacy & Security
+
Your data is private. Your impact model, stories, and Key Moves are visible only to you and contributors you explicitly invite. Nothing is shared publicly without your action.
Contributor access is controlled. Invite links give story-capture access only - contributors cannot edit your profile, Key Moves, or any other stories.
AI processing. When you generate an output, your org's stories and profile are sent to Claude (Anthropic) to produce the result. Anthropic's privacy policy applies to that processing. No data is used to train AI models.

✦ Thinking Lab
Drop a thought, idea, or note. The How Agent will find the patterns.
Lead with How uses AI to help you make sense of what you capture, draft in your voice, and surface patterns in your work over time. Here's what that means in plain language.
What AI does. The How Agent reads your stories, photos, documents, articles, and scrapbook notes so it can answer questions, draft posts, summarize documents, and surface patterns.
Which providers. Anthropic (Claude) for text, OpenAI for voice transcription and the agent's spoken voice, ElevenLabs for optional voice cloning (off by default).
What's sent. When you use an AI feature, the relevant content goes to the provider, gets processed, and comes back. Nothing more than what's needed for that feature.
What doesn't happen. Anthropic and OpenAI don't train their models on data sent through their APIs. We don't sell or share your content. Nothing becomes public unless you choose to make it public.
What you control. You can use the Library without invoking AI at all. You can delete anything you've put in. You can delete your account by replying to any email from us.
Send this link to the admin of the org you want to merge into. They'll see your Key Moves and stories, and the AI will analyze how well you align before anyone commits.
Your org will fold into theirs. Their org becomes the primary.
No one is committed until both sides agree.
