Help & Resources
Everything you need to get the most from Lead with How.
The FoundationWhy
Lead with How is a leadership framework designed by Alison Kling to help organizations stop spinning and start scaling.
Most organizations know their What, their mission, and their Why, their vision. But the missing piece is always the How. How, specifically, do you carry out your mission? How do you move from where you are to the world you’re trying to build?
The How is where impact lives. And once you find it, you have to say it out loud, in every room, to every funder, on every platform. That’s what this app helps you do.
The FrameworkHow
How is a strategic model: a repeatable pattern of behavior that connects what you do (mission) to the world you want to create (vision).
It’s the unique pathway you take to carry out your mission and achieve your vision. Your Key Moves are the specific, active, daily practices that make up your How. They’re the lived reality of how your organization shows up every day.
Once you figure out your How, you need to lead with it. Communicate it out loud, in as many contexts as possible.
Getting StartedHow the App Works
1. Build your impact model. Start with your Mission (what you do), Vision (the future you’re building), and Key Moves (your specific How). The AI can suggest Key Moves based on your mission and vision.
2. Capture stories. Every story is evidence that your How is real and working. Quotes, data, moments: capture them as they happen. The more specific, the better.
3. Generate outputs. LinkedIn posts, board summaries, annual report drafts, speeches. The AI uses your stories and Key Moves to write in your voice, grounded in your actual work.
4. Watch your core impact statement emerge. As stories accumulate, the AI synthesizes what’s becoming true about your organization, and you’ll see it appear in your impact model.
What are Key Moves? Your specific How: the active, strategic practices your organization repeats every day. Not values, not goals. The real work, named.
Who should capture stories, and can I invite others? Everyone, from the CEO to the newest hire. Use Invite Contributors on your dashboard; anyone with the link can add stories without creating an account.
Common QuestionsFAQ
How is this different from a regular AI? A broad AI is brilliant, and it forgets; every session starts fresh. Lead with How is yours. Every story you capture is tagged and kept, and How doesn’t just store it, it knows what it means, reading it against your own Key Moves, finding patterns no one would catch by hand, and handing your impact back in your voice. Not recognition. Interpretation, a library with a librarian who has a point of view.
Will it replace my daily ChatGPT or Claude? No, and it isn’t trying to. Thinking out loud, drafting, being pushed back on: that’s a different job, and a broad AI is great at it. Lead with How is the layer that remembers what it all meant, your work, your patterns, your how, so nothing you live through gets re-explained or lost. Most people use both.
Do I have to be good at AI or prompting? No. You don’t have to get good at prompting. It gets good at you. Bring a story in two sentences, a photo from the field, a forwarded email; How asks the one question that makes it worth keeping, and files it.
Why is it worth it? Because every story is a payment toward an insight you can’t get any other way, the pattern doesn’t exist until enough of them do. Over time you stop being your own archivist, context-engineer, and methodologist. You get the archive that compounds, the framework that structures it, and a voice that persists, so you never start from scratch again.
Is my archive really mine? Yes, yours for life. Capture never stops being free, and your archive stays yours whether you’re on a trial, subscribed, or not.
Is this for me, or my whole organization? Both. Lead with How is as much about your personal growth as your organization’s scale, one impact model that holds your team inside and your board and supporters outside, all speaking with clarity.
